Planning range
One standard sliding glass door at a single-family house, replaced in the opening that is already there, the door and the labor in one price: a common two-panel slider, the frame, the glass, and the install, on a wall the crew can reach. A two-panel reading, an exterior French door, a telescoping door, a four-panel slider, a bifold, a per-square-foot rate, a frame the price left out, labor the price left out, removal the price left out, glass the price left out, a panel the price left out, rollers the price left out, a screen the price left out, a new opening the price left out, a window package, a vinyl re-side, and an exterior paint job are separate.
Typical planning range $1,200 to $4,000. National spread $600 to $20,000.
- DIY or hire
- Hire the door. Clearing the furniture is the owner's part. A heavy panel, a flashing line, and a track that has to stay level are where a weekend becomes the job.
- Repair or replace
- Replace the door when the frame is soft, the glass has failed, or the panel will not lock. Repair rollers, a screen, or one panel on a sound frame. Price a window package, a re-side, or a paint job on its own page.
One standard sliding glass door at a US single-family house — replaced in the opening that is already there, the door and the labor in one price, a common two-panel slider, the frame, the glass, and the install, on a wall the crew can reach — often clusters around $1,200–$4,000. That is the typical sliding glass door replacement cost. How much it costs to replace a sliding glass door, in that scope, is that door, not a window package and not a vinyl re-side. Patio door replacement cost, for any patio door the crew replaces, is $700–$6,500. Sliding glass door cost, when the door and the labor are in the price, is the same typical band. The cost to install a sliding glass door, in an opening that already exists, is that band. A new opening the price left out adds $1,000–$3,600. An exterior French door is $1,300–$5,500. A four-panel slider is $2,500–$7,000. A bifold door is $5,000–$20,000. The wider national spread, about $600–$20,000, covers a new patio-door install at the low end and a bifold door at the high end. The windows around the door are the window guide. The wall the door sits in is the vinyl siding guide. The paint on that wall is the exterior painting guide. These are typical planning ranges, not a survey and not a quote.
This page is one door at one house. A bid may call it the sliding glass door replacement cost, how much it costs to replace a sliding glass door, patio door replacement cost, sliding glass door cost, or the cost to install a sliding glass door. The door and the labor are in the price when the number is the typical band. It is not a window package, which is the window guide. It is not a vinyl re-side, which is the vinyl siding guide. It is not a paint job, which is the exterior painting guide. A door the owner carries home and sets in a frame the city already allowed is a smaller product. This page does not price it as the typical band.
The price of the job is the door the crew sets and the hour that puts the labor in the price. The door is the first cut. Whether the door and the labor are already in the price is the second. A standard slider, a two-panel slider, an exterior French door, a four-panel slider, and a bifold are ways to buy one door. The door replaces a different door. It is not a second door under a price you already have.
The rows below are ways to read one job. They are not added together. The job table is one door at a wall the crew can reach. The typical band is one standard slider, door and labor in: that row in full. A two-panel slider replaces that rate from $400 to $2,400. An exterior French door replaces it from $1,300 to $5,500. A four-panel slider replaces it from $2,500 to $7,000. A bifold replaces it from $5,000 to $20,000. Use a rate row only for a line the door row does not include. A rate the proposal already includes is not a second line.
| Job | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Sliding door, door and labor in | $1,200–$4,000 |
| Two-panel slider | $400–$2,400 |
| Exterior French door | $1,300–$5,500 |
| Four-panel slider | $2,500–$7,000 |
| Bifold door | $5,000–$20,000 |
| Rate or added line | Typical planning range |
|---|---|
| 72×80, 40 square feet, at $10–$50 a square foot | $400–$2,000 |
| 144×96, 96 square feet, at $10–$50 a square foot | $960–$4,800 |
| 60×80, at the size price | $1,000 |
| 72×80, at the size price | $1,200 |
| 144×96, at the size price | $2,900 |
| Vinyl frame, materials only | $400–$1,200 |
| Wood frame, materials only | $1,000–$5,000 |
| Labor, if the price left it out | $200–$1,000 |
| Removal, if the price left it out | $100–$500 |
| Glass, if the price left it out | $200–$1,200 |
| One panel, if the price left it out | $450–$700 |
| Rollers and tracks, if the price left them out | $100–$300 |
| Screen, if the price left it out | $130–$550 |
| New opening, if the price left it out | $1,000–$3,600 |
The job rows replace one another. Do not add a four-panel price on top of a standard slider for the same opening. The rate row is a line the door left out, or another reading of the same door. A rate the proposal already includes is not the rate row on top. A frame the bid already folded into $1,200–$4,000 is not a frame row on top.
A standard sliding door — the door and the labor in one price — is typically $1,200–$4,000. The floor of the row is the typical floor. The top of the row is the typical top. The whole row is the typical band. One thousand two hundred can be this row at its floor. Four thousand can be this row at its top or an exterior French door, a telescoping door, or a four-panel slider inside its overlap. Ask which reading the bid is.
A two-panel slider is typically $400–$2,400. Four hundred is $200 under the wider floor and $800 under the typical floor. Two thousand four hundred is $1,200 above the typical floor and $1,600 under the typical top. The overlap with the typical band is $1,200–$2,400. From $400–$600 the two-panel sits under the wider floor. From $600–$1,200 the two-panel sits under the typical band and inside the wider spread. From $1,200–$2,400 the two-panel is inside the typical band. Four hundred can be this row at its floor. Two thousand four hundred can be this row at its top. A standard slider price does not get this row on top.
An exterior French door is typically $1,300–$5,500. One thousand three hundred is $100 above the typical floor and $700 above the wider floor. Five thousand five hundred is $1,500 past the typical top and $14,500 under the wider top. The overlap with the typical band is $1,300–$4,000. From $4,000–$5,500 the French door has left the typical band and stays inside the wider spread. One thousand three hundred can be this row at its floor. Five thousand five hundred can be this row at its top. A slider price does not get the French row on top.
A four-panel slider is typically $2,500–$7,000. Two thousand five hundred is $1,300 above the typical floor and the floor of this row. Four thousand is the typical top and inside this row. Seven thousand is $3,000 past the typical top and $13,000 under the wider top. The overlap with the typical band is $2,500–$4,000. From $4,000–$7,000 the four-panel has left the typical band and stays inside the wider spread. Two thousand five hundred can be this row at its floor. Seven thousand can be this row at its top. A standard slider price does not get this row on top.
A bifold door is typically $5,000–$20,000. Five thousand is $1,000 past the typical top and $4,400 above the wider floor. Twenty thousand is the wider top. The bifold does not sit inside the typical band. From $5,000–$20,000 the job has left the typical band and stays inside the wider spread. Five thousand can be this row at its floor. Twenty thousand can be this row at its top. A slider price does not get the bifold row on top.
Sliding glass door replacement cost
The sliding glass door replacement cost is this page when the crew is at the wall and the door and the labor are in the price. The sliding glass door replacement cost, for that one door in the existing opening, is the same price. A bid that says sliding glass door replacement cost and a bid that says the cost to install a sliding glass door are the same dollars when the site, the door, and the labor match and the opening is already there. The typical band, $1,200–$4,000, is one standard slider. It is not a second door stacked on a frame you already have.
The replacement is often a few hours for a door the crew can reach, and it can take a day. The door is inside the door price. It is not a second bill on a number that was already the door. A 72×80, which is 40 square feet, at $10–$50 a square foot is a way to read the same footprint, not a second door. Forty times $10 is $400. Forty times $50 is $2,000. The per-foot rate and the lump sum are two readings of one door. They are not added. A bid that already names $1,200–$4,000 does not get the foot on top.
How much does it cost to replace a sliding glass door
How much it costs to replace a sliding glass door is the door at one house. One standard slider, door and labor in, is $1,200–$4,000. A bid that says how much it costs to replace a sliding glass door and a bid that says sliding glass door replacement cost are the same dollars when the site, the door, and the labor match. A price near $600 should say a new patio-door install at its floor, or an interior French door at its floor, not the standard slider. A price near $4,000 should say whether the number is this band at its top or a French door, a telescoping door, or a four-panel slider inside its overlap.
A 60×80 at the size price is $1,000. One thousand is $400 above the wider floor and $200 under the typical floor. It sits under the typical band and inside the wider spread. One thousand can be this size at its price. A standard slider price does not get this size on top.
A 72×80 at the size price is $1,200. One thousand two hundred is the typical floor and $600 above the wider floor. It can be this size at its price or the typical band at its floor. A per-foot reading of the same 72×80 does not get this price on top.
A 144×96 at the size price is $2,900. Two thousand nine hundred is $1,700 above the typical floor and $1,100 under the typical top. It sits inside the typical band. Two thousand nine hundred can be this size at its price. A standard slider lump sum does not get this size on top.
A 144×96, which is 96 square feet, at $10–$50 a square foot is $960–$4,800. Ninety-six times $10 is $960, which is $360 above the wider floor and $240 under the typical floor. Ninety-six times $50 is $4,800, which is $800 past the typical top and $15,200 under the wider top. The overlap with the typical band is $1,200–$4,000. From $960–$1,200 the 144×96 sits under the typical band. From $4,000–$4,800 the 144×96 has left the typical band and stays inside the wider spread. Nine hundred sixty can be this row at its floor. Four thousand eight hundred can be this row at its top. A lump sum does not get this row on top.
Four thousand plus $4,000 for a second slider at the typical top is $8,000, which is $4,000 past the typical top, $1,000 past the four-panel top, and $12,000 under the wider top. That $8,000 is inside the bifold row. It is two doors, or one bifold inside its range. It is not one standard slider. A number above $20,000 should name more door, a second door, a window package, a re-side, or a paint job. Ask which reading the bid is.
Patio door replacement cost
Patio door replacement cost is any patio door the crew replaces, not a sliding door with a second name. That replacement is $700–$6,500. A bid that says patio door replacement cost and a bid that says sliding glass door replacement cost are the same dollars only when both bids are the typical slider, or only when both bids are that wider replacement and the numbers still match. A price near $700 should say a patio door replacement at its floor, not a standard slider with the labor in. A price near $6,500 should say a patio door replacement at its top, not the typical top.
Seven hundred is $100 above the wider floor and $500 under the typical floor. Six thousand five hundred is $2,500 past the typical top and $13,500 under the wider top. The overlap with the typical band is $1,200–$4,000. From $700–$1,200 the replacement sits under the typical band and inside the wider spread. From $4,000–$6,500 the replacement has left the typical band and stays inside the wider spread. Seven hundred can be this row at its floor. Six thousand five hundred can be this row at its top. A slider price does not get this replacement row on top.
A telescoping door is $1,500–$5,000. One thousand five hundred is $300 above the typical floor and $900 above the wider floor. Five thousand is $1,000 past the typical top and $15,000 under the wider top. The overlap with the typical band is $1,500–$4,000. From $4,000–$5,000 the telescoping door has left the typical band and stays inside the wider spread. One thousand five hundred can be this row at its floor. Five thousand can be this row at its top. A slider price does not get the telescoping row on top.
An interior French door is $600–$3,000. Six hundred is the wider floor and $600 under the typical floor. Three thousand is $1,800 above the typical floor and $1,000 under the typical top. The overlap with the typical band is $1,200–$3,000. From $600–$1,200 the interior French door sits under the typical band and inside the wider spread. From $1,200–$3,000 it is inside the typical band. Six hundred can be this row at its floor. Three thousand can be this row at its top. An exterior French price does not get the interior row on top.
Sliding glass door cost
Sliding glass door cost is the door at one house, not a window with a door named and not priced. When the job is one standard slider and the door and the labor are in the price, that cost is $1,200–$4,000. A bid that says sliding glass door cost and a bid that says sliding glass door replacement cost are the same dollars when the site, the door, and the labor match. A price near $400 should say a two-panel slider at its floor, or vinyl materials at their floor, not a slider with the labor in. A price near $1,200 should say whether the door and the labor are both in.
Vinyl, materials only, is $400–$1,200. Four hundred is $200 under the wider floor and $800 under the typical floor. One thousand two hundred is the typical floor and the top of this materials row. The materials row and the typical band meet at $1,200. They are two readings. They are not added. Four hundred can be this materials row at its floor. One thousand two hundred can be this materials row at its top or the typical band at its floor. A $1,200–$4,000 price does not get $400–$1,200 on top.
Wood, materials only, is $1,000–$5,000. One thousand is $400 above the wider floor and $200 under the typical floor. Five thousand is $1,000 past the typical top and $15,000 under the wider top. The overlap with the typical band is $1,200–$4,000. From $1,000–$1,200 the wood frame sits under the typical band. From $4,000–$5,000 the wood frame has left the typical band and stays inside the wider spread. One thousand can be this materials row at its floor. Five thousand can be this materials row at its top. An installed slider price does not get the wood frame on top.
Aluminum, materials only, is $600–$2,500. Six hundred is the wider floor and $600 under the typical floor. Two thousand five hundred is $1,300 above the typical floor and $1,500 under the typical top. The overlap with the typical band is $1,200–$2,500. From $600–$1,200 the aluminum frame sits under the typical band. From $1,200–$2,500 it is inside the typical band. Six hundred can be this materials row at its floor. Two thousand five hundred can be this materials row at its top. An installed slider price does not get the aluminum frame on top.
Fiberglass, materials only, is $800–$3,500. Eight hundred is $200 above the wider floor and $400 under the typical floor. Three thousand five hundred is $2,300 above the typical floor and $500 under the typical top. The overlap with the typical band is $1,200–$3,500. From $800–$1,200 the fiberglass frame sits under the typical band. From $1,200–$3,500 it is inside the typical band. Eight hundred can be this materials row at its floor. Three thousand five hundred can be this materials row at its top. An installed slider price does not get the fiberglass frame on top.
Cost to install a sliding glass door
The cost to install a sliding glass door is the install at one house, not a replacement with a new wall named and not priced. When the opening is already there, that cost is $1,200–$4,000. A bid that says cost to install a sliding glass door and a bid that says sliding glass door replacement cost are the same dollars when the site, the door, and the labor match and the opening is already there. A price near $1,000 should say a 60×80 at the size price, not an install with the labor in. A price near $1,200 should say whether the door and the labor are in.
A new opening the same price left out is $1,000–$3,600. One thousand is $400 above the wider floor and $200 under the typical floor. Three thousand six hundred is $2,400 above the typical floor and $400 under the typical top. One thousand two hundred plus $1,000 is $2,200, inside the typical band, only when the $1,200 left the new opening out. One thousand two hundred plus $3,600 is $4,800, which is $800 past the typical top and $15,200 under the wider top, only when the $1,200 left the new opening out. Four thousand plus $1,000 is $5,000, which is $1,000 past the typical top and the floor of the bifold row. Four thousand plus $3,600 is $7,600, which is $3,600 past the typical top, $600 past the four-panel top, and $12,400 under the wider top, only when the $4,000 left the new opening out. A bid that already names the opening does not get this row on top.
Labor the same price left out is $200–$1,000. Two hundred is $400 under the wider floor. One thousand is $200 under the typical floor. One thousand two hundred plus $200 is $1,400, inside the typical band, only when the $1,200 left the labor out. One thousand two hundred plus $1,000 is $2,200, inside the typical band, only when the $1,200 left the labor out. Four thousand plus $200 is $4,200, which is $200 past the typical top and $15,800 under the wider top. Four thousand plus $1,000 is $5,000, which is $1,000 past the typical top and the floor of the bifold row, only when the $4,000 left the labor out. Rollers and tracks the same price left out are $100–$300. One hundred is $500 under the wider floor. Three hundred is $300 under the wider floor. One thousand two hundred plus $100 is $1,300, inside the typical band, only when the $1,200 left the rollers out. What the range includes
The typical band assumes one standard sliding glass door. The frame is in. The glass is in. The labor is in. The opening is already there. The wall is reachable. A two-panel slider is in the band only from $1,200 to $2,400. An exterior French door is in the band only from $1,300 to $4,000. A telescoping door is in the band only from $1,500 to $4,000. A four-panel slider is in the band only from $2,500 to $4,000. A bifold is not in the band. A 72×80 at $10–$50 a square foot is in the band only from $1,200 to $2,000. A window package, a vinyl re-side, and an exterior paint job are not in the band.
How long the work takes depends on the door, and the bid’s schedule is the one that counts. A slider the crew can reach is often a few hours, and it can take a day. A four-panel or a bifold is often longer. The time is a way to read that door. It is not a second clock on a price that was already the door. The next door is not in this price.
The floor of the wider spread, $600, is a new patio-door install at its floor, or an interior French door at its floor. It is not a standard slider someone discounted. The top, $20,000, is a bifold door at its top. It is not the slider row plus every add-on. Four thousand plus $3,600 for a new opening is $7,600, not $20,000. Four thousand plus $4,000 for a second slider at the typical top is $8,000, not $20,000. A number above $20,000 should name more door, a second door, or a job past this page. Ask which one.
None of the bands include labor on a door the bid already priced, except where that labor is a line the price left out. The labor line is $200–$1,000. Two hundred is $400 under the wider floor. A completed door price does not get this row. One thousand two hundred plus $200 is $1,400 only when the $1,200 left the labor out.
None of the bands include removal on a price the bid already built, except where that removal is a line the price left out. The removal line is $100–$500. One hundred is $500 under the wider floor. One thousand two hundred plus $100 is $1,300, inside the typical band, only when the $1,200 left the removal out. A door that already names the removal does not get $100–$500 on top.
None of the bands include glass the door price left out, except as its own row. That line is $200–$1,200. Two hundred is $400 under the wider floor. A door that already names the glass does not get the glass row. Four thousand plus $1,200 is $5,200 only when the $4,000 left the glass out.
None of the bands include one panel the door price left out, except as its own row. That line is $450–$700. Four hundred fifty is $150 under the wider floor. A door that already names the panel does not get the panel row. One thousand two hundred plus $700 is $1,900 only when the $1,200 left the panel out.
None of the bands include rollers on a price the bid already built, except where those rollers are a line the price left out. The roller line is $100–$300. One hundred is $500 under the wider floor. One thousand two hundred plus $300 is $1,500, inside the typical band, only when the $1,200 left the rollers out. Four thousand plus $300 is $4,300, which is $300 past the typical top and $15,700 under the wider top. A door that already names the rollers does not get $100–$300 on top.
None of the bands include a screen the door price left out, except as its own row. That line is $130–$550. One hundred thirty is $470 under the wider floor. A door that already names the screen does not get the screen row. Four thousand plus $550 is $4,550 only when the $4,000 left the screen out.
None of the bands include a new opening the door price left out, except as its own row. That line is $1,000–$3,600. One thousand is $200 under the typical floor. A door that already names the opening does not get the opening row. Four thousand plus $3,600 is $7,600 only when the $4,000 left the opening out.
None of the bands include a window package, which is the window guide, often $6,000–$12,000 for about 10 vinyl windows, inside a wider spread of about $3,000–$30,000. Six thousand is the floor of that typical band. Twelve thousand is the top of that typical band. One thousand two hundred plus $6,000 is $7,200, which is $3,200 past this page’s typical top, $12,800 under this page’s wider top, and inside that guide’s typical band. One thousand two hundred plus $12,000 is $13,200, which is $9,200 past this page’s typical top, $6,800 under this page’s wider top, and the top of that guide’s typical band. Four thousand plus $6,000 is $10,000, which is $6,000 past this page’s typical top, $10,000 under this page’s wider top, and inside that guide’s typical band. Four thousand plus $12,000 is $16,000, which is $12,000 past this page’s typical top, $4,000 under this page’s wider top, $4,000 past that guide’s typical top, and $14,000 under that guide’s wider top. That sum is a door plus a window package only when each bid left the other out. A window price that already includes the door does not get this page on top.
None of the bands include a vinyl re-side, which is the vinyl siding guide, often $8,000–$16,000 for a common 2,000 square foot house, inside a wider spread of about $1,500–$30,000. Eight thousand is the floor of that typical band. Sixteen thousand is the top of that typical band. One thousand two hundred plus $8,000 is $9,200, which is $5,200 past this page’s typical top, $10,800 under this page’s wider top, and inside that guide’s typical band. One thousand two hundred plus $16,000 is $17,200, which is $13,200 past this page’s typical top, $2,800 under this page’s wider top, $1,200 past that guide’s typical top, and $12,800 under that guide’s wider top. Four thousand plus $8,000 is $12,000, which is $8,000 past this page’s typical top, $8,000 under this page’s wider top, and inside that guide’s typical band. Four thousand plus $16,000 is $20,000, which is this page’s wider top, $16,000 past this page’s typical top, the top of that guide’s typical band, and $10,000 under that guide’s wider top. That sum is a door plus a re-side only when each bid left the other out. A siding price that already includes the door does not get this page on top.
None of the bands include an exterior paint job, which is the exterior painting guide, often $3,000–$7,000 for the body and trim of a common house, inside a wider spread of about $1,500–$18,000. Three thousand is the floor of that typical band. Seven thousand is the top of that typical band. One thousand two hundred plus $3,000 is $4,200, which is $200 past this page’s typical top, $15,800 under this page’s wider top, and inside that guide’s typical band. One thousand two hundred plus $7,000 is $8,200, which is $4,200 past this page’s typical top, $11,800 under this page’s wider top, and the top of that guide’s typical band. Four thousand plus $3,000 is $7,000, which is $3,000 past this page’s typical top, $13,000 under this page’s wider top, and the top of that guide’s typical band. Four thousand plus $7,000 is $11,000, which is $7,000 past this page’s typical top, $9,000 under this page’s wider top, $4,000 past that guide’s typical top, and $7,000 under that guide’s wider top. That sum is a door plus a paint job only when each bid left the other out. A paint price that already includes the door does not get this page on top.
The band is the door price. A coupon on the door is not subtracted. Read the form before you take a number off the bid. A credit you have not received is not inside the planning range. This page does not price a coupon, and it does not name a percentage of the cost that comes back at resale.
Warranties are part of the contract, and this page is not a reading of one company’s form. A door, when the company offers a return for a line the crew missed, is about that line. Read it. The return visit is not a dollar line in the planning range.
A standard homeowners policy is built around sudden and accidental damage. A door you chose to replace is the kind of project those policies commonly leave with the owner. A storm that damages a covered opening, when the form responds to it, is a different question from a door you are buying. Read the form before you treat the policy as the budget. The $1,200–$4,000 band is not an insurance estimate.
This page does not price a city’s fee on top of a complete door price, except where a new opening is a line the price left out. A door that already names a fee does not get that fee on top.
As a cross-check, not a bid: one standard slider, door and labor in, is $1,200–$4,000, the typical band. A two-panel slider is $400–$2,400. An exterior French door is $1,300–$5,500. A four-panel slider is $2,500–$7,000. A bifold is $5,000–$20,000. A new opening the price left out is $1,000–$3,600. If a bid and that reading are far apart, the bid is a different door, a left-out opening, a second door, a window package, a re-side, or a paint job.
What moves the price
| Driver | How it changes the bid |
|---|---|
| The door | One standard slider, door and labor in, is $1,200–$4,000, the typical band. A two-panel slider is $400–$2,400, and the typical band includes that row only from $1,200 to $2,400. An exterior French door is $1,300–$5,500, and the typical band includes that row only from $1,300 to $4,000. A four-panel slider is $2,500–$7,000, and the typical band includes that row only from $2,500 to $4,000. A bifold is $5,000–$20,000, past the typical band and inside the wider spread. The door picks the row. It is not a second bill. |
| The footprint | A 72×80 at $10–$50 a square foot is $400–$2,000. A 144×96 at $10–$50 is $960–$4,800. A 72×80 at the size price is $1,200. A 144×96 at the size price is $2,900. The footprint is a reading of the door. It is not a second bill on a door that already names it. |
| The labor | Labor the bid leaves out is $200–$1,000. Two hundred is $400 under the wider floor. One thousand is $200 under the typical floor. The labor is inside the door price when the bid names it. One thousand two hundred plus $200 is $1,400 only when the $1,200 left the labor out. |
| The frame | Vinyl, materials only, is $400–$1,200. Wood, materials only, is $1,000–$5,000. A completed price of $1,200–$4,000 already holds a frame the bid named. One thousand two hundred is the vinyl materials top and the typical floor. It is not both bills. |
| The removal | Removal the bid leaves out is $100–$500. One hundred is $500 under the wider floor. A completed price of $1,200–$4,000 already holds that line when the bid named it. Four thousand plus $500 is $4,500 only when the $4,000 left the line out. |
| The glass | Glass the bid leaves out is $200–$1,200. Two hundred is $400 under the wider floor. A completed price of $1,200–$4,000 already holds glass the bid named. Four thousand plus $1,200 is $5,200 only when the $4,000 left the glass out. |
| The opening | A new opening the bid leaves out is $1,000–$3,600. One thousand is $200 under the typical floor. A completed price of $1,200–$4,000 already holds an existing opening. Four thousand plus $3,600 is $7,600 only when the $4,000 left the new opening out. |
| The second door | Two standard sliders at the typical top are $8,000, which is $12,000 under the wider top and inside the bifold row. That reading is two doors, or one bifold. It is not one standard slider. |
| The other job | A window package is $6,000–$12,000 on the window guide. A vinyl re-side is $8,000–$16,000 on the vinyl siding guide. An exterior paint job is $3,000–$7,000 on the exterior painting guide. Windows the bid is replacing, siding the bid is hanging, or paint the bid is rolling does not get this page on top when that price already includes the door. |
The door is the first cut, and it is not a door you add to itself. A standard slider at $1,200, and a 72×80 at the size price, can be talked about in the same bid. They are not the same door twice. One thousand two hundred is the typical floor. One thousand two hundred is also the 72×80. Ask which door is in the price.
The footprint is the second cut. A slider at $4,000, a four-panel inside its overlap, and a 144×96 at $50 a square foot can share the neighborhood of those dollars. One is the typical top. One is the four-panel row inside the band. One is $4,800, which is $800 past the typical top. The higher number is not a typical door that someone misread as a second door.
The same slider in a lower-cost area and in a high-labor city can sit at opposite ends of $1,200–$4,000 without either bid being wrong. Ask whether the price is the door, the footprint, or both, and ask whether a new opening, a second door, or a bifold is in. Window replacement, vinyl siding, and exterior house painting are the projects that meet this door and are not the door. Price them on their own pages. Two bids that disagree about the door, the footprint, and whether the labor is included are not the same job.
DIY or hire
Hire the door. A panel that has to stay square, a flashing line that has to keep the water out, and a track that has to stay level are where a small miss becomes a second visit. The labor, the door, and the opening are the job. A Saturday with a heavy panel on a soft sill is where those three get missed.
A door the owner can set in a sound frame, where the city allows it, is a different product. That door is not the slider with the labor in. On the one pro door, one standard slider is $1,200–$4,000. That is the labor for the door and the opening that is already there.
Do not treat the glass alone as the door. If the frame, the flashing, and the track still have to be done, you are pricing a crew’s job without the crew. The person on the install should say what happens if the opening or the track is wrong. Clearing the furniture is the owner’s part. A receipt for a door is not this installed price.
Repair or replace
Replace the door when the frame is soft, the glass has failed, or the panel will not lock, and the house is staying. A repair on sound rollers is not this band. A quote near $600 should say a new patio-door install at its floor, or an interior French door at its floor, not a standard slider. A quote near $1,200 should say whether the door and the labor are in. A quote near $4,000 can be a standard slider at its top or a French door, a telescoping door, or a four-panel slider inside its overlap. Ask which reading the bid is.
Price a two-panel slider on $400–$2,400. Price an exterior French door on $1,300–$5,500. Price a four-panel slider on $2,500–$7,000. Price a bifold on $5,000–$20,000, and do not read that bifold as the slider band with a different name. Do not read a window package as the door band with a different name.
Send the windows to the window guide, typically $6,000–$12,000. Send a re-side to the vinyl siding guide, typically $8,000–$16,000. Send the paint to the exterior painting guide, typically $3,000–$7,000. If the same season includes any of those, they are separate scopes. Do not fold them into the door price.
How long a door lasts is not a number on this page. A one-house door is not a warranty that the track will never bind. A new season of weather is not a warranty that the seal will never need a repair. The bid’s scope is the work you bought.
How to use this number
Ask two or three door installers for a written price that names the door, whether the price is a lump sum, whether the door and the labor are included, whether the opening and the removal are already inside the price, and what happens if the opening or the track is wrong. Compare one standard slider, door and labor in, with $1,200–$4,000. Compare a two-panel slider with $400–$2,400, an exterior French door with $1,300–$5,500, a four-panel slider with $2,500–$7,000, and a bifold with $5,000–$20,000. Keep the door and the labor inside those rows. Put a left-out new opening at $1,000–$3,600, and a left-out glass line at $200–$1,200, on their own lines.
A very low bid on one door is a reason to ask whether the labor is included, not a reason to celebrate. A quote near $600 should say a new patio-door install at its floor, not a crew on a standard slider. A quote near $1,200 should say whether the labor is in. A high bid should point at a four-panel, a bifold, a new opening, or the labor market. Two or three local bids on the same door, the same opening, and the same glass are the number that matters. How this site sets the band is explained on the methodology page.
Common questions
Answers describe national planning ranges, not your house.
What is the sliding glass door replacement cost?
A typical planning range for the sliding glass door replacement cost is $1,200 to $4,000 for one standard slider in the opening that is already there, inside a wider spread of roughly $600 to $20,000. That scope is the door and the labor in one price. A two-panel slider is $400 to $2,400. An exterior French door is $1,300 to $5,500. A four-panel slider is $2,500 to $7,000. A bifold door is $5,000 to $20,000. These are typical planning ranges, not quotes.
How much does it cost to replace a sliding glass door?
It costs $1,200 to $4,000 to replace one sliding glass door in the existing opening, the door and the labor in the price. A two-panel slider is $400 to $2,400. A 72×80 at the size price is $1,200. A 60×80 at the size price is $1,000, which is $200 under the typical floor. A 144×96 at the size price is $2,900, inside the typical band. These doors replace one another. They are not three bills under one door. These are typical planning ranges, not quotes.
What is the patio door replacement cost?
Patio door replacement cost, for any patio door the crew replaces, is $700 to $6,500. Seven hundred is $100 above the wider floor and $500 under the typical floor. Six thousand five hundred is $2,500 past the typical top and $13,500 under the wider top. A sliding door at $1,200 to $4,000 is the typical band inside that replacement spread. An exterior French door is $1,300 to $5,500. These are two readings of one patio door. They are not added. These are typical planning ranges, not quotes.
How much does a sliding glass door cost?
A sliding glass door costs $1,200 to $4,000 when the door and the labor are in the price and the opening is already there. A bid that says sliding glass door cost and a bid that says sliding glass door replacement cost are the same dollars when the site, the door, and the labor match. Vinyl, materials only, is $400 to $1,200. Wood, materials only, is $1,000 to $5,000. The frame replaces the installed door. It is not the door plus the frame. These are typical planning ranges, not quotes.
What is the cost to install a sliding glass door?
The cost to install a sliding glass door, in an opening that already exists, is $1,200 to $4,000. A new opening the same price left out adds $1,000 to $3,600. One thousand two hundred plus $1,000 is $2,200, inside the typical band, only when the $1,200 left the new opening out. Four thousand plus $3,600 is $7,600, which is $3,600 past the typical top and $12,400 under the wider top, only when the $4,000 left the new opening out. These are typical planning ranges, not quotes.
